In the Lofoten Islands of Norway the sheep graze on wild mountainsides and remote ocean islets during the light summer months. Fresh air, salt, seaweed and rich pastures (fertilized by sea birds) all contribute to high quality wool production.
Why choose wool? Wool is a wonderful raw material with qualities other textiles can only dream of. Wool is self-cleaning, flame and bacteria-retardant, temperature regulating and keeps you warm even when wet. Wool fibers are highly elastic and offer excellent shape retention with durability. In addition, wool is a 100% renewable resource. Norway is known for its broad range of heritage breed sheep, and SUFibers is pleased to bring in yet another line of exceptional yarn from Norway!. The wool is collected from local farms in Lofoten, then sent with the coastal ferry to Hillesvåg in Bergen to be spun. Back in Lofoten the yarn is hand dyed using traditional plant dyes. Lofoten Wool also carry natural sheep coloured yarn. The company was established in 2014 by Ragnhild Lie, a textile crafts artist turned sheep farmer.
The Lofoten 2-ply in both natural ($22/100g) and hand dyed ($38/100g) are the first Lofoten Wool yarns to be introduced here in the United States! (Prices subject to change, based on shipping and Duty charges) 50g and Mini-skeins MAY be made available
